How to apply to MA in Design

KHiB will be merged with the University of Bergen (UiB) 1. January 2017. For you as an applicant this only means that you will be applying for admission using the UiB application web.

New building
The internationally acclaimed Norwegian architectural firm Snøhetta has designed the new building for Bergen Academy of Art and Design. The new building is the first building by Snøhetta in Bergen. When completed, it will be the city's second largest building after the Grieg Hall. 

NB! The application web will be open to new applicants after December 1. 2016.

Master in design
The MA programme in design offers practical, methodological as well as theoretical skills to work with design at an advanced level – functionally, aesthetically as well as ethically.

Students are expected to contribute towards development of their profession through innovative methods - primarily by way of one major, independent and experimental project. Two specialities are available: Furniture and Spatial Design/Interior Architecture, and Visual Communication.

Admission Process 2017

  • Application deadline: 1. FEbruary
  • Invitation for interviews: will be sent from us in week 11
  • Interviews: week 13 (28 - 29 March)
  • Offer of a study place: will be annonced on the aplication web in week 18.


Admission Requirements
The Master in Design builds on a Bachelor in Design or other relevant education corresponding to 180 study credits. Applicants that have to apply for visa, must upload the bachelor diploma not later than 1. March.

Applicants are assessed on the basis of a written project description, submitted documentation of relevant design production (portfolio), and an interview.

Financial requirements
Applicants who are not EU/EEA citizens must provide documentation of financing their studies: http://www.udiregelverk.no/en/documents/udi-circulars/rs-2010-101/rs-2010-101v1/

Applicants who are not able to upload proof of financing their studies (approx. NOK 104 000) will not be considered for admission, regardless of other qualifications.
Here you can upload a bank statement saying that you have sufficient funds available.

Application and Admission
Before the deadline the applicant have to fill in the online application form. Here you can also upload all the documents like diplomas, transcript of records, project description and your portfolio.

Short listed applicants will be invited to an interview at KHiB.The interviews will take place in week 13 (28.-29. March).

If you for some reasons are not able to upload your portfolio on the admission web, you can save it on a memory stick marked with your name and send it in an envolope. Mark the envelope clearly: "No commercial value" and the name of the programme you are applying for. Make sure that the memory stick will not make a hole in the envolope. The envolope should be adressed to:

Admission will be determined by an overall assessment of the applicant's qualifications, the quality of previous artistic work demonstrated by submitted documentation, the project description and the interview.

Information to all applicants
You have to log into the "Admission web" to get information about your application. Applicants that are rejected in the first evaluation, will not be notified by any other means. The shortlisted applicants will receive a letter with date and time for interview.
Those who will get an offer or a place on the waiting list have to log into the web and answer yes or no to the offered studyplace.

Study contract
Saying yes to the offered study place, means that you are also approving the content of the study contract.

Requirements for the project description
Make sure that you clearly notify which subject area you are aplying for: Visual communication or Spatial design. The description should demonstrate:

  • The theme and area of artistic/design investigation proposed for the MA project.
  • Your motivation to fulfill the project and the relevance for the society.
  • The aim and problems to be discussed in the project.
  • How you are going to perform and present the project.


Language Requirements
In order to be able to participate in the MA programme, you must have a good understanding of a Scandinavian language  and/or English upon commencement of the studies. English and Norwegian will be used in seminars. Tutoring will be offered in English and Norwegian.

NB! Admission in 2018 will require a formal verification of language skills, documernted with newly results from IELTS , TOEFL og Cambridge language proficiency test. You will find more information here.

Requirements for the Portfolio
Your portfolio should include documentation of relevant design production that demonstrate your academic qualifications for carrying out an independent MA project.

Remember also that you have to upload/send the form showing the content of your portfolio.

When you open the "søknadsweb", start using the "button" Register international applicant (Utenlandsk søker).
