Design and dignity: How can design support dignity in the lives of the frail and old?

Bergen National Academy of the Arts and Stiftelsen Verdighetsenteret join forces in a seminar aimed at focusing on the needs of frail elderly persons.

An interdisciplinary group of participants aim to challenge practitioners and decision makers in a seminar of innovative thinking in care. Which opportunities are available when agents from care and agents from design focus on attitudes or create unusual concepts for frail elderly persons?

The seminar's key theme is dignity; especially among frail and disabled elderly persons with reduced cognitive abilities, physical capacity, social integration and thereby in danger of losing their autonomy - whether they still live in their private homes or in care facilities. Key words are dementia, legal protection, human rights and locked doors. The seminar aims to demonstrate how professional design may serve the health industry and how interdisciplinary cooperation may address these social issues adequately.

Design not only refers to good form, but also to making things possible! Today's designers are characterized by their ability to emphatically recognize everyday challenges of living, and to provide solutions which improve a person's ability to maintain independence. The key factors are problem solving, user orientation and innovative solutions. With these key factors the answer may lie just as much in the shape of a system rather than a physical object.

The seminar 28 November 2011 combines lectures/presentations, workshops and open dialogues between professions.
