Call for Presentations: the Sensuous Knowledge Conference, January 2013
The Art Museums of Bergen and KHiB organize the next Sensuous Knowledge Conference which is called "Ta(l)king Place". The conference takes place on 23-25 January 2013. Call for presentations within 15 June.

The BA Degree Show 2012
57 art and design students show their BA exam projects at the BA Degree Show 2012. The design students specialize either in Visual Communication or in Furniture and Spatial Design/Interior Architecture. The art students exhibit their BA exam projects in Ceramics, Photography, Printmaking, Textiles and in Fine Art. The doors open on 11 May at 7pm.
Exhibition period: 11-15 May
Opening hours: 12 -20

Bergen International Wood Festival 2012
Bergen International Wood Festival is a bi-annual competition in constructing spatial experimental structures in wood. Designers, architects and artists from all over the world participate. This is the fourth time KHiB and its collaboration partners organize the festival which takes place on 18-23 May 2012 in the city centre.

Artistic Research and Development

KHiB has received NOK1.3 mill for artistic research project
The project "Re: place" has received NOK1.3 million from the Program for Artistic Research for a two-year period starting this autumn. Professor Jeremy Welsh initiated the project which is a collaboration with Oslo National Academy of the Arts and The Grieg Academy in Bergen and other external partners. The project is an investigation of place, time and memory as manifested in artistic works exploring image, sound and texts - or combinations of these.

Brandon LaBelle shows multi-channel audio work in Munich
Brandon LaBelle, Professor in New Media, is showing an experimental installation in Lothringer 13 in Munich, Germany, from 28 June to 15 July 2012. "Preparations for common recognition" is the title of the project which is related to LaBelle's research on the subject of 'invisibility' as well as questions of spatial practice today.

Kari Dyrdal shows artistic research in textiles at The Norwegian Knitting Industry Museum
Professor in textiles, Kari Dyrdal, presents ten works from the series "Jacquardfortellinger" which is part of her artistic research at KHiB. The exhibition discusses the handmade and the machine made in the past and in the present. The exhibition is on until 24 May at the Norwegian Knitting Industry Museum which is located in Salhus outside of Bergen.

Claudia Reinhardt shows artistic research in Rom8
Associate Professor Claudia Reinhardt shows work in progress at the exhibition "L' important c' est la rose" in Rom8 at KHiB campus in Bergen from 21 May till 6 June. The opening takes place on 21 May at 5pm.

Kjell Rylander and Caroline Slotte at Gustavsberg Konsthall
Research fellow Kjell Rylander from Bergen Academy of Art and Design and Caroline Slotte, who held her Viva Voce in 2011, will be exhibiting the results of their artistic research at Gustavsberg Konsthall from 26 May to 16 September 2012, together with Frida Hållander and Mårten Medbo.

Two MA students take sound art to Roskilde
Cecilia Jonsson and Signe Lidén, MA students in art, will present their work in a group exhibition that will open on 27 April at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Roskilde. The exhibition is called 'Soundings 2' and is part of the Nordic Sound Art Graduate Show organised by KUNO and is on display until 3 June 2012.

Open Seminars, Lectures and Conferences

MA Seminar in Fine Art: "Inbetween Spaces"
This year's seminar takes place at Landmark, Bergen Kunsthall, on 7 May at 11am - 6pm. The speakers are Amund Sjølie Sveen, Christine Hansen, Helgard Mahrdt, Paul O'Neill and Stephen Zepke. Different states of in betweenness, artistically and politically, is the starting point for the seminar.

Public presentations by the students at Creative Curating
The nine graduating students present their exam projects as open lectures on 22 May at 10am. The sensors' comments are also open to the public and take place on 22 May at 6h30pm and on 23 May at 7pm.

Hauan Johnsen to collaborate with a Palestinian artist at international indigenous peoples festival in Nord-Troms
Professor Hilde Hauan Johnsen is one of eight artists participating in an art project called 'The Stitch Project', which will take place during the Riddu Riđđu festival in Nord-Troms from 11 to 15 July 2012. MA student Kiyoshi Yamamoto and BA student Marie Skeie Lobo are also involved in the project.

Eamon O'Kane part of group exhibition in San Fransico
Professor Eamon O'Kane is part of the show "DECADE - Celebrating 10 years" at the Gregory Lind Gallery in San Fransico.  It's on display from 21 June to 31 August. Among the other artists are Reed Anderson, Sarah Bostwick, Thomas Campbell, Chris Corales, Jim Gaylord, Chris Gentile and Seth Koen.

Brandon LaBelle to the Whitney Biennal in New York
Brandon LaBelle, Professor in New Media at Bergen Academy of Art and Design, has been invited to participate at the Whitney Biennal 2012 in New York. His performance installation will take place from 2 to 6 May 2012.

BA students show prototypes at Furniture Fair in New York
Five design students have been chosen to present their furniture prototypes at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York from 19 to 22 May. They are: Cathrine Bækken, Lars Beller Fjetland, Martin Rygner, Natasha B Crona and Silje Nesdal. - It's great that our BA students will be exposed at such an important international arena, says Professor Dave Vikøren.

Rita Marhaug shows monoprints in Galleri allmenningen
Professor in Printmaking, Rita Marhaug, shows the exhibition "Tilfeldige tanker" in Galleri allmenningen in Bergen from until 6 May. The exhibition consists of Marhaug's most recent works which are made with different techniques of monoprint.

Tonje Bøe Birkeland shortlisted for Hasselblad Foundation's fellowship
Tonje Bøe Birkeland, MA student in Fine Art who is about to graduate in May 2012, is shortlisted for the Hasselblad Foundation's fellowship in photography. She participates with her MA project "Letter from Mongolia". She's also one of the ten nominated finalists that will participate in the exhibition "New Nordic Photography 2012" at the Hasselblad Center in Gothenburg from 9 June to 19 August.

Jason Dunne and Morten Skjærpe Knarrum to NEU/NOW Live Festival
Two of the three artists and designers educated in Norway who are selected to participate at this year's NEU/NOW Live Festival are from KHiB: BA student in Fine Art Jason Dunne, and design alumni Morten Skjærpe Knarrum. In addition, Tolga Balci and Albert Cheng-Syun Tang are participating in the on-line festival. The Festival which is organised by the European League of Institutes of the Arts, takes place in Porto from 11 to 15 July.

Galleri Fisk opens new exhibitions every second week. The opening night is every other Friday at 7 pm. Opening hours: kl. 12-4 pm Saturday and Sunday. Address: Kong Oscars gate 46, Bergen.

Awards, Purchases and Commissions

Former KHiB students win Award for Design Excellence
Former KHiB students Martin Lothe Sæterdal and Morten Skjærpe Knarrum were both presented with the Award for Design Excellence for Young Talents by the Norwegian Design Council at the annual award ceremony in Oslo on 18 April 2012. Morten Skjærpe Knarrum won first prize in the Open Class category for his master's project 'Behind the walls of Vik'. He graduated from the MA programme in spring 2011. Martin Lothe Sæterdal won first prize in the Design for All category for his BA project 'Mister X - Visual textbook', a textbook that presents mathematical subject matter using illustrations, in addition to text and formulas. He graduated from the BA programme in spring 2011.

Furniture by design student Lars Beller Fjetland launched in Milan
The newly established Italian furniture manufacturer Discipline launched four of BA student Lars Beller Fjetland's pieces of furniture at the international furniture fair Salone del Mobile i Milano i April. Fjetland has designed the furniture series "Drifted" which consists of a stool in two versions and a bench in ash with a seat made of cork. In addition, he has also designed a series of wooden birds of old window frames.

Hindenes Knudsen Berg with new furniture in national TV studio
The furniture designer trio Steinar Hindenes, Adjunct Professor, and KHiB alumni Petter Knudsen and Anders Berg, has designed yet another set designs including a sofa and a table for the TV show "Ettermiddagen" which is broadcast nationally on weekdays.  The sofa is called "Hub" and the table "Flake". The trio has earlier designed furniture for the prime time talk show "Senkveld".

Studies

The MA study in Design attracts good applicants - also from abroad
For the academic year 2012-2013 KHiB has received 138 applications for the MA study programme in Design. This is 25 more than last year. 77% of the applications are sent from postal addresses abroad. - The international applicants are undoubtedly better qualified this year than previous years. KHiB is very pleased with this development, says Mona Larsen, Dean at the Dept of Design.

Book launch: "Diary of an Imaginary Egyptian" by Brandon LaBelle
Professor Brandon LaBelle is launching his new book "Diary of an Imaginary Egyptian" on 21 July in Berlin. The book is marked by an urgency to unsettle divides, both imaginary and physical, between west and east, Anglo and Arab, and to put into question narratives of the political. The publication is the other in the series Doormats published by Errant Bodies Press in Berlin.

Book launch: "Folly" by Sunniva McAlinden
The publication is the result of former professor Sunniva McAlinden's artistic research. The launch takes place in Rom8 in Bergen on 22 May from 5 to 7pm and is a conversation between the author and Malin Barth.

Bergen Academy of Art and Design (KHiB) in Norway offers BA and MA study programmes in Fine Art and in Design in addition to further education and life-long learning. KHiB also has research fellows in the Programme in Research Fellowships in the Arts (PhD level). In addition, there is a part-time study programme in Curating and a one-year course in Practical Pedagogical Education. KHiB has 325 students and around 100 staff members.
