Design students to the Stockholm Furniture and Light Fair
This year's 11 design students at Bergen National Academy of the Arts are seeking their fortune at the Stockholm Furniture Fair, 7th - 11th February, with their exciting prototypes of furniture. The Fair is the world's largest meeting place for Nordic design, and this is the ninth time that students from the Academy participate. Project leader is Professor Dave Vikøren.

Reorganisation: from two art departments to one
1 August 2012, the Dept of Fine Art and Dept of Specialised Art will be merged to form the new Department of Fine Art. 'Our organisation will be more aligned with today's international arts field,' says Paula Crabtree, chair of the board and rector.

New strategic plan 2012-2016
The Academy's new strategic plan states that by 2016 KHiB will be accredited as a specialised university college, that KHiB will still be an independent  institution that collaborates with relevant partners, and that KHiB is located in one new building.

The new building: The building at Møllendal is taking shape
"The new building will be functional, compact and intelligent," explains Rector Paula Crabtree. The new building project is now in a new phase. In 2011, KHiB worked closely with Snøhetta and Statsbygg on the building. In the best case scenario, the building will be allocated funds in the 2013 national budget, which would allow the building to be completed in 2015/16.

Artistic Research and Development

Arve Håland with new solo exhibition in Galleri Parken
Arve Håland, Associate Professor at KHiB, uses effects that we would normally try to avoid - first of all rust, but also other kinds of discolouration - for a meaningful, aesthetic purpose. The paintings are part of his artistic research project at KHiB. Exhibition period: 11 February - 4 March. Venue: Galleri Parken, Bergen.

Eamon O'Kane with installation in Ireland
Eamon O'Kane, Professor of Visual Art, shows a large scale installation outside of the The Dock Arts Centre in Co. Leitrim, Ireland, from 10 February to 7 April. The work comprises a 30 meter long drawing situated in a panoramic structure.

New collaboration with Fine Art Dept in Newcastle
Bergen National Academy of the Arts has initiated an Erasmus exchange program for academic staff with the Fine Art Dept at The Newcastle University in the UK.

Galleri Fisk: student-run gallery
Galleri Fisk opens new exhibitions every second week. The opening night is every other Friday at 7 pm. Opening hours: kl. 12-4 pm Saturday and Sunday. Address: Kong Oscars gate 46, Bergen. The first part of the programme this spring is:

  • Box Turtle: 10-12 February 
  • Anders Elsrud Hultgreen: 17-19 February

Galleri Bokboden: student-run gallery
The gallery is located in Marken 37b and opened just before Christmas in a restored second-hand book shop. The first student out this year is Benedicte Clemetsen with the performance "The Currents" at 8pm from 31 January to 5 February.

Publications

Kari Dyrdal: "mønster arbeider / pattern works 2007 - 2011"
The publication is the result of Professor Kari Dyrdal's artistic research at KHiB. The book will be launched in Rom8 in Vaskerelven 8 on 29 February at 6pm.

Bergen National Academy of the Arts actively supports and promotes artistic research. Among other measures, we support publications originating from our subject areas. All publications at the Academy are peer reviewed. Our publications aim to contribute to professional development, discourse and critical reflection within art and design in general and specifically within higher art education.

Muuto Talent Award to Marte Straalberg
BA student in design Marte Straalberg has been awarded the third place in the international design competition the Muuto Talent Award for the prototype of the lamp "Sprinkle". More than 400 contributions by design students from 20 design institutions in the Nordic countries participated.

Open Seminars, Lectures and Conferences

Data is political: a symposium on art, design and information politics
Speakers include Gediminas & Nomeda Urbonas, Daniel van der Velden, Philippe Rekacewicz, and Jessica Rylan with contributions from Michelle Teran, Jill Walker Rettberg among other artists and practitioners. The seminar is initiated by Associate Professor Amber Frid-Jimenez at KHiB, and Ben Dalton, principal lecturer at Leeds Metropolitan University in Leeds. Funded by the Research Council of Norway and KHiB. It takes place on 15 March.

Portfolio day for BA applicants on 22 February 2012
KHiB invites potential BA applicants to come and get feedback on their portfolios and to receive information about what it takes to become a student at Bergen National Acadmy of the Arts. There will be open workshops, presentations and exhibitions, meet students and staff. Date: 22 February 2012.

This is Bergen National Academy of the Arts (KHiB)

Bergen National Academy of the Arts (KHiB) in Norway offers three year BA and two year MA study programmes in addition to further education and life-long learning in art and design. KHiB also has research fellows in the Programme in Research Fellowships in the Arts (PhD level). KHiB's specialisations are: Visual Communication, Furniture- and Spatial Design/Interior Architecture, Painting, New Media, Video, Photography, Printmaking, Ceramics and Clay, Textiles, Sound, Installation, Performance. In addition there is a part-time study programme in Curating and a one-year course in Practical Pedagogical Education. KHiB has 325 students and around 100 staff members.
