Mathias Faldbakken and Toril Johannessen to Documenta
The two KHiB alumni Matias Faldbakken (1973) and Toril Johannessen (1978) are chosen to present works at this year's Documenta in Kassel. "KHiB is very proud that our former students have been chosen to such an important event", says Rector Paula Crabtree.

MA Degree Show in Design 2012 - Substans: "Designing Human Interaction"
This year's exhibition showcases design projects which are all centered on human interaction. The 15 graduates are strongly aware of their designer roles. Solidly grounded in their personal identities, they empathize with the lives of others or bridge the gap between new technologies and human needs.

The Degree Show takes place in Art Museums of Bergen, Permanenten, and opens on 18 April at 6pm. It's on until 29 April.

MA Degree Show in Fine Art 2012 - "A ride full of traps"
The exhibition shows the ambitiousness and playfulness of our 19 master's students this spring.A ride full of trapschases you, but with charm. Are they traps, or is it a fantastic attraction? The odds are that the exhibition will shake you up.A ride full of trapsis guaranteed to pull you out of your comfort zone.

The Degree Show opens on 20 April at 8pm at Bergen Kunsthall and is open till 13 May.

Bergen International Wood Festival 2012
Bergen International Wood Festival is a bi-annual competition in constructing spatial experimental structures in wood. Designers, architects and artists from all over the world are welcome to participate. This is the fourth time KHiB and its collaboration partners organize the festival which takes place on 18-23 May 2012. Register within 20 April.

Open Seminars, Lectures and Conferences

Call for Presentations - Sensuous Knowledge Conference, January 2013
The Art Museums of Bergen and KHiB organize the next Sensuous Knowledge Conference which is called "Ta(l)king Place". The conference takes place on 23-25 January 2013. Call for presentations within 15 June.

MA Seminar in Design - Substans 2012: "Designing Human Interaction"
This year's theme, Designing Human Interaction, hosts speakers such as Hoon Kim from Why Not Smile in New York, Vinay Venkatraman from Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design, and Jenny Pfau from Cradle to Cradle in Hamburg.

The Seminar is followed by Design-Jam, where regional and local professionals join in an event of professional inspiration. Both the seminar and the Jam take place in the Degree Show at the Art Museums of Bergen, Permanenten, on 24 April from 2pm.

MA Seminar in Fine Art: "Inbetween Spaces"
This year's seminar takes place at Landmark, Bergen Kunsthall, on 7 March at 11am - 6pm. The speakers are Amund Sjølie Sveen, Christine Hansen, Helgard Mahrdt, Paul O´Neill and Stephen Zepke. Different states of in betweenness, artistically and politically, is the starting point for the seminar. Associate Professor Steven Dixon moderates the seminar.

Brandon LaBelle to the Whitney Biennal in New York
Brandon LaBelle, Professor in New Media at Bergen Academy of Art and Design, has been invited to participate at the Whitney Biennal 2012 in New York. His performance installation will take place from 2 to 6 May 2012.

Heli Rekula presents new works in Helsinki
Heli Rekula, Professor of Photography at KHiB, is participating in the group exhibition "Phantasma" at Gallery Kalhama & Piippo Contemporary in Helsinki. The exhibition is on until 20 April and is part of the Helsinki Photography Biennial, HpB12. The other artists are Mauro Fariñas, Jenny Källman, Matts Leiderstam, Heli Rekula, Jarkko Räsänen and Erik Snedsbøl.

Rita Marhaug shows monoprints at Galleri allmenningen
Professor in Printmaking, Rita Marhaug, shows the exhibition "Tilfeldige tanker" in Galleri allmenningen in Bergen from 14 April to 6 May 2012. The exhibition consists of Marhaug's most recent works which are made with different techniques of monoprint. This material is partly related to other parts of Rita Marhaug's artistic practice concerning performance work where fluids such as oil, milk and blood are central components.

KHiB alumni Azar Alsharif exhibits in Rom8
On 19 at 6pm April Azar Alsharif opens her exhibition "Knowledge Is Faithful" in Rom8 in Vaskerelven 8 in Bergen. Alsharif graduated with a BA in Fine Art from KHiB in 2011 and has had a studio space at USF Verftet since. The exhibition includes photographed pictures, collage, constructed text and sculpture. The exhibition is on until 23 April 2012.

Galleri Fisk: student-run gallery in Bergen
Galleri Fisk opens new exhibitions every second week. The opening night is every other Friday at 7 pm. Opening hours: kl. 12-4 pm Saturday and Sunday. Address: Kong Oscars gate 46, Bergen.

The gallery is located in Marken 37b and is a restored second-hand book shop.

High standard among applicants for MA Programme in Fine Art
The standard was particularly high this year, and the competition for a place in the programme was tough. Bergen Academy of Art and Design is very pleased with this year's admissions', says chair of the admissions committee, Professor Jeremy Welsh.

Performance-workshop with Alastair MacLennan
The newly founded organization Performance Art Bergen and KHiB are organizing a three day workshop on 18-20 April. The recognized north Irish performance artist Alastair Maclennan leads the workshop which forms part of the Spring Festival ("Vårfestival 2012") of Performance Art Bergen, on 20-22 of April.

Publications

Christine Hansen with article on photography in "Objektiv"
Christine Hansen has written the article "Det dobbelte fotografi" in "Objektiv" which is a publication for camera based art. The article is about portraits where the facial expression remains from another situation. Christine Hansen is Associate Professor II in photography at KHiB. Objektiv #5 will be launched at Kunstnernes Hus in Oslo on 12 April 2012 at 8pm.

Awards, Purchases and Commissions

Several grants from the Norwegian Ministry of Culture
Also this time several people related to the Academy have received grants of different kinds from the Norwegian Ministry of Culture. Rector Paula Crabtree is very pleased that so many from KHiB are favoured. The Ministry has granted 233 million Norwegian kroner to various grants for artist for 2012.

This is Bergen National Academy of the Arts (KHiB)

Bergen Academy of Art and Design (KHiB) in Norway offers BA and MA study programmes in Fine Art and in Design in addition to further education and life-long learning. KHiB also has research fellows in the Programme in Research Fellowships in the Arts (PhD level). In addition, there is a part-time study programme in Curating and a one-year course in Practical Pedagogical Education. KHiB has 325 students and around 100 staff members.
